Junior guard Richard Byrd led the way with 33 points in Adelphi's win.
Worcester, MA - Junior guard Richard Byrd (Central Islip, NY/Copiague) exploded for 33 points with nine rebounds and three steals to lead undefeated Adelphi University past Assumption College, 79-65, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action Sunday, November 29 at the Laska Gym.
Senior guard Casey Cosgrove (Andover, MA/Andover) (17 points with five three-pointers) and junior guard David Akinyooye (Elmont, NY/Elmont) (13 points, 12 rebounds, three blocked shots) played well in support roles for the Panthers, now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Senior guard/captain Courtland Bluford (Ft. Washington, MD/Saint Vincent Pallotti) scored 19 points and junior forward/captain Mike Baldrelli (Sutton, MA/Holy Name) added a double-double 18 points, 10 rebounds.
Adelphi sped to a 34-20 lead with 5:49 left in the first half on a long triple from Cosgrove. The Greyhounds would outscored the Panthers, 12-4 over the last five minutes to cut the gap to 38-32 at the half, but the Panthers pushed their lead to, 52-38 in the second half on another three-pointer by Cosgrove with 16:12 left.
The Greyhounds then ran a 16-2 spurt to make it a two-point game, 52-54 with 9:33 left. However, two Byrd free throws and a Cosgrove triple sparked a 13-5 run that gave Adelphi a 10 point lead, 67-57 and put the game out of reach.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, December 2, when they travel to New Haven, Connecticut for a 7:30 pm meeting with Southern Connecticut State.
