Worcester, Mass. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Assumption College, 67-46, in Northeast-10 conference action this afternoon at Laska Gym. The Panthers drop to 0-4 and 0-3, while the Greyhounds improve to 4-1 and 2-1 in the league.
Sophomore Theresa Foley was the only Panther in double figures with 12 points to go along with a team-high five rebounds. Sophomore Erika Cottle had nine points with five steals.
The Panthers tied the game three times in the first 20 minutes, including a 7-2 run capped by a three-pointer from junior Ashley Caiafa, 18-13, at 7:46. Adelphi maintained its lead for the next four plus minutes, with its largest margin, 27-21, on a made free throw by freshman Samantha Briendbach with 3:08 remaining. Adelphi shot a respectable 40 percent from the field, however Assumption went 14-for-27 (51.9 percent) including a 12-0 run to end the half with a 33-27 lead at intermission.
The Panthers closed to within four points, 35-31, on Caiafa layup in the opening minute of the second half, but the Greyhounds tooks over from there. Assumption's lead ballooned to 18 points midway through the stanza and Adelphi had no answer. The Greyhounds reached its largest lead of the contest, 63-41, with 3:19 left in regulation to cruise to victory.
Gabrielle Gibson led a balanced Assumption attack with 16 points. Molly Griffiths had 14 points, while Kayla Parker added 12 points and a team high seven rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, December 2, as they travel to Southern Connecticut State for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
