Unbeaten Adelphi raced out to an 8-0 advantage on the way to a 68-49 thrashing of visiting College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference encounter Tuesday night at The Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City.
The Panthers improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the league in their first year as a member of the Northeast-10 Conference. Saint Rose fell to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Adelphi shot 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from the floor and held the Golden Knights to 37.0 percent (17-for-46) shooting to post the easy victory.
Freshman guard Andre Pope was the lone Saint Rose player in double-figures,scoring 20 points. He also added three assists.
Sophomore guard Rob Gutierrez added eight points and three assists. Senior guard Jermaine Clark also finished with eight points, but was only three-of-17 from field, including each two-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The Golden Knights made only six of 18 3-pointers in the contest.
Saint Rose cut its deficit to four, 16-12, following a Clark jumper, but the Panthers responded with a 12-1 spurt that put them in control 28-13 with 8:28 to go until intermission.
Adelphi kept its lead at double digits the rest of the way.
The Panthers were led by junior guard Richard Byrd, who tossed in 16 points and also pulled down eight rebounds.
Senior guard Chris Diasparra came off the bench to add 14 points to the Adelphi cause in 29 minutes of play.
Saint Rose returns to NE-10 action on Sunday, when it plays host to Pace University at 3:30 p.m.
