Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Junior David Akinyooye tallied 16 of his game-high 26 points to guide Adelphi University to a 97-71 victory over Molloy College tonight at Quealy Gymnasium. The Panthers are off to their best start in eight years with a 2-0 record, while the Lions drop to 1-1.
A total of five Panthers scored in double figures, with junior Richard Byrd adding 12 points and five assists. Senior Casey Cosgrove contributed 10 points along with 10 assists. Sophomore Robert Johnson had 11 points, while freshman Chris Ranglin put in 10 points off the bench.
Adelphi jumped out to a quick 12-5 lead to start the game, but Molly managed come back on a 9-2 rally to knot the score at 14 with 12:58 remaining. After two more ties and a quick lead change, the Panthers again took control, surging ahead on a 14-0 run to open a 34-20 margin at 4:15. Cosgrove accounted for the last five points of the half as Adelphi took a 47-29 lead into the lockerroom.
The Panthers' lead ballooned to 24 points, 55-31, on a Akinyooye jumper, at 17:43. Thanks in part to 64.3 percent shooting, AU maintained at least a 20 point advantage for the remainder of the contest. Freshman John Calcarco contributed back to back three-pointers to give Adelphi is largest lead, 91-64, with less than five minutes remaining in regulation as they cruised to a victory.
On the game, Adelphi shot an impressive 57.6 percent from the field and 70.0 percent from the free throw line. Molloy held a 33-32 advantage in rebounds, but the Panthers forced 19 turnovers, while committing just nine.
The Lions had four players in double figures led by Edward Freeman with 17. Harley Fuller had 16 points and a game-high 12 boards. Brian Hutchinson and Carl Palmer had 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Adelphi returns to action tomorrow in day two of the ECC/NE10 Lions' Classic, where they will take on Dowling College at 2:00 p.m.
