The Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1961, under the direction of former Athletic Director George Faherty, to honor those former Adelphi athletes, coaches and friends who have distinguished themselves during their time at the University or thereafter.
From 1961 until 1981, the University inducted 61 honorees into the Hall of Fame. Among those honored were former President Dr. Paul Eddy, former baseball coach Ron Davies, former major league pitcher Joe Sambito and former track coach Stu Parks.
After a ten year hiatus, the Hall of Fame was reestablished in 1991, and has since inducted outstanding athletes including Olympic record-holder Bob Beamon, fellow Olympian Portia Lack, radio and television broadcaster Al Trautwig, and lacrosse great Bob Engelke. In 1992, Al Davis, President of the Oakland Raiders and a former Adelphi coach, was inducted. Membership in the Hall of Fame stands at 182 after the induction of the six in April, 2009.
