Garden City, N.Y. - Junior Ashley Caiafa poured in 20 points to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 82-77 victory over Caldwell College this afternoon at the Center for Recreation & Sports. The Panthers improve to 2-7, while the Cougars drop to 3-4.

Also in double figures for Adelphi was sophomore Theresa Foley with 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Erika Cottle had 17 points, four assists and four steals. Freshman Samantha Briendbach added 10 points along with six rebounds.

The Panthers led from the tip-off with the Cougars getting their first lead on a Gillian Felix layup at 14:56, 9-8. Adelphi regained the lead on a 3-pointer by Alexis Williams as they opened up an eight points lead, 27-19, through the 7:08 mark. The Cougars closed the gap to thee points on a 6-1 run, but then went cold as the Panthers rattled off nine unanswered point capped by a Caiafa layup, 36-25, with 3:50 remaining. Adelphi, which shot 50 percent in the half, held onto a comfortable 12 point lead, 48-36, at intermission.

Adelphi went up by 16 points, 54-38, at 17:06 on a Foley jumper. However Caldwell began to fight back, outscoring Adelphi, 12-1, to make it a five-point game, 55-50, with 13:49 left in regulation. But, the Panthers stayed on top, opening up a double digit lead on a Briendbach layup, 67-56, at 10:02. Although Caldwell outscored Adelphi, 41-34 in the second half, they were unable to close the gap as the Panthers held on for the win.

The Cougars were led by Torey Jones with 20 points, followed by Gillian Felix with 19 points and 14 boards. Kirsty Leedham had 18 points with Kaitlyn Lambert adding 10 points.

The Panthers are back in action next Saturday, December 19, as they take on Dowling College at 1:00 p.m.
