The Adelphi University men's basketball team hosted the Cougars of Caldwell College in a non-conference contest this afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport. The Panthers took a 17-point lead into the half and never looked back on their way to a 79-48 victory over Caldwell. Adelphi improves to 8-1 overall, while the Cougars fall to 0-6.

The Panthers came out strong in the opening minutes by grabbing a 12-3 lead with 15:45 left in the half. The Cougars would come back to cut the lead to 15-10 on a Peter Difley jumper. After Difley's jumper, the Panthers went on a 13-5 run over the next four minutes. The run was highlighted by 3-pointers from senior Casey Cosgrove and sophomore Robert Johnson. Adelphi would then jump out to a 34-17 lead after a pair of free throws from junior David Akinyooye. The Panthers shot 54-percent from the field in the first half and 64-percent from behind the arc, leading to a 45-28 halftime lead.

Adelphi would extend their lead to 50-30 with 17:57 left in regulation after a free throw from senior Steffon Farley. Caldwell cut the lead to 52-41 with 12:44 remaining, after two lay-ups from Matt Cohen and Diffley. The Panthers would then go on a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 20, sparked by four free throws from junior Richard Byrd. Adelphi ended the game on a 14-3 run in the final six minutes of regulation. The Panthers held Caldwell to shoot 36-percent from the field and 28-percent from 3-point range.

For the Panthers, Byrd tallied a game-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds. Cosgrove scored 13 points, handed out seven assists, and collected four steals, while senior Chris Diasparra and Farley each tossed in 13 points as well. Farley also recorded four blocked shots.

For the Cougars, Diffley scored a team-high seven points and grabbed eight misses, while John Reed and Anthony Gibson both added six points.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, December 19 when they travel to take on Caldwell in the first day of the Caldwell College Tournament at 6:00 pm.
